When we launched Proximate just over a year ago, we had more questions than answers.
We were driven by a fundamental belief that the problems facing our world are too complex – too human – to solve from afar. The most effective solutions need to come from people with lived experience – those proximate to the problem.
With that north star, we set out to find stories to explore that thesis. We looked to places where problems seemed most intractable (Ukraine, Palestine, Eastern Europe) and to issues that define our moment (climate, poverty, affordable housing).
Today, we have a much clearer sense of our mission. We've brought on columnists and built regional newsrooms; built media partnerships and grown our audience. Here's a quick overview of what we've accomplished in our first thirteen months:
Like any any independent publication, the work we do requires sustained support. It’s only through the generosity of readers like you that we can continue to produce high-quality, compelling nonprofit journalism.
Your donation – big or small – will directly support Proximate’s ongoing work and enable us to expand our reach, cover more stories, and deepen our partnerships.
At a pivotal moment when traditional approaches to global challenges are failing, we believe we are proving that better solutions emerge when communities most affected by problems have the power to share their stories and shape decisions. We're grateful for your readership and support.

Proximate is an independent media platform covering movements for participatory problem-solving. We look at the news through the lens of money: how it’s given away, how it’s invested, and how it’s distributed by government.
We are a fiscally sponsored project of Movement Strategy Center.
